Welcome to Shelbyville
The documentary film revolves around issues that arose with local residents and new immigrants, and how they dealt with their personal experiences to create a more welcoming community in the growing town of Shelbyville, Tennessee.
Many turned out for the screening events, with participants reflecting on their own experiences and issues the residents of Shelbyville faced and comparing it to their own communities. Moderators posed questions about similar issues communities have faced about immigration concerns. Panelists provided expertise on creating a ‘welcoming’ approach that embraces diversity by fostering an environment of tolerance, respect, and understanding.
Faith-based groups, nonprofit professionals, and local community members came together to listen to each others’ reactions and experiences, as well as find ways they could improve their communities. Madeline noted that, “It was a film which the diverse audience was really receptive to because many could relate to the same experiences.”
