Audience: New Americans

Length: 1.5–2 hours

  • Learn about current immigration and other laws affecting immigrants and refugees
  • Recognize the rights and responsibilities that immigrants have within the U.S. system
  • Receive resources and tools for immigrants to defend their rights and advocate for reform

The “Know Your Rights and Responsibilities” workshop is designed for New Americans to learn about immigration and other laws that affect the immigrant and refugee communities. Using a participatory methodology, participants will explore national and local laws, immigration procedures, and enforcement and detention policies. The Advocates will provide participants with information on local organizations and programs that can provide immigration and other assistance. Through short presentations, group discussions and activities, immigrants will learn about their rights and responsibilities within the U.S. system.  The presentation will conclude with a civic engagement session, designed to give immigrants the tools and resources they need to defend their rights and advocate for change.
