Lesson 1: Identifying Commonly Held Assumptions

Goal:  To develop an informed perspective on immigration and immigration issues

Objectives:

  • Students will identify commonly held assumptions about immigration
  • Students will gather data to support or refute generalized statements
  • Students will identify and define a list of vocabulary words related to immigration and refugee issues

Time Frame:  One to two class periods

Age Level:  Middle school-adult

Vocabulary:  immigrant, citizenship, assimilate, assumption, assertion

Attention Getter - Our Roots in Immigration
This simple attention getter will raise awareness of the counties of origin of their own ancestors and those of their classmates.

Activity 1.1: Assertions Found in Letters to the Editor
Letters to the editor in newspapers nationwide reflect various points of view about immigration.  This activity allows students to examine assertions made and should be used in conjunction with Worksheet 1.1 Compiling Assertions about Immigration

Activity 1.2: Critiquing Assertions
Students will discuss assertions made in the Activity 1.1: Assertions Found in Letters to the Editor and read fact sheets in the corresponding categories to determine the accuracy of the assertions.

Activity 1.3: Immigration Vocabulary
Build a foundation of vocabulary for discussing immigration policy, the process of immigration, and attainment of citizenship through an interactive quiz.

Activity 1.4: The Melting Pot Concept
Integration or assimilation?  Throughout the nation's history the debate has raged.  Through quotes, recipes, a quiz, a fact sheet and article - the students will form an opinion about how immigration has flavored the stew of our nation.

Activity 3.4 Dispelling the Myths About Immigrants
It takes facts and reputable research to address myths and misconceptions that people may believe.  Use the facts that follow to address common myths perpetuated about immigrants and immigration to the United States.  There are several approaches to the activity.
